Abstract EN:

This thesis analyses flaubert's relationship to religion. The time when he lived, and above all the family environment, prevented him from receiving the christian education which other writers enjoyed. The cynicism of his youth plays with macabre pictures of death and nothingness. On the other hand he is sensitive to chateaubriand's estheticism and to biblical imagery ; but he retains a voltarian picture of the clergy, and he is aware of the disappearance of christianity, furthermore degraded by sentimentality. The second part of the thesis examines the contents of la tentation de saint antoine, 1849, and flaubert's nostalgic reaction to the death of the gods. In the 1874 tentation de saint antoine flaubert moves from a voltarian attitude to one borrowed from renan. The presentation of buddha is an opportunity for comparative mythology. But flaubert's intention is not a destructive one, and la tentation de saint antoine enabled him to revive the mystic universe in art.

Cette these analyse les rapports de flaubert avec la religion. L'epoque ou il a vecu, et surtout la famille ou il est ne, ont fait que flaubert n'a pas recu dans son enfance la formation chretienne dont disposaient d'autres ecrivains. Le cynisme de sa jeunesse joue avec des images macabres de la mort et du neant. Il est d'autre part sensible au christianisme esthetique de chateaubriand et aux images de la bible ; mais il garde une vision voltairienne du clerge et il a conscience de la disparition du christianisme, par ailleurs degrade par le sentimentalisme. La seconde moitie de la these examine le contenu de la tentation de saint antoine de 1849 et la reaction nostalgique de flaubert a la mort des dieux. Dans la tentation de saint antoine de 1874 flaubert passe d'une attitude voltairienne a une attitude renanienne. La presentation du bouddha est l'occasion d'une analyse de mythologie comparee. Mais l'intention de flaubert n'est pas de detruire, et la tentation de saint antoine lui a permis de faire revivre dans l'art l'univers mystique.
