The present Thesis studies the gold coinage issued by the kings of Cyprus during the classical period, from the beginning of the fourth century B. C. To the destruction of the kingdoms by Ptolemy I of Egypt in 310/309 B. C. The first chapter presents the silver coinage of the kingdoms during the fifth century with particular reference to their weight standard. Chapter II comprises the catalogue and the die study of all the gold coins that have been assembled from public and private collections and from auction catalogues, with a discussion at the end of the chapter on those gold coins identified as false. The three following chapters (III to V) elaborate on the metrological and metal analyses of the gold coins, to reveal the weight standard, the denominations and the quality of the metal employed. The choice of types and their iconography are also examined, together with the legends of the coins and their circulation. In the sixth chapter the coins, the literary sources, the inscriptions and the archaeological evidence are combined in a coherent whole to form the basis for an analysis of the economic policy of the Cypriot kings in the fourth century. The final chapter discusses the contemporary gold coinages of the Persians and the Greeks to show the context in which the Cypriot gold coinage was created. Finally, an Appendix sets out the most important ancient texts linked to the topics of the thesis.

Ma Thèse étudie le monnayage en or produit par les rois de l’île de Chypre tout au long de l’époque classique, du début du IVe siècle à l’anéantissement des royaumes chypriotes par Ptolémée en 310/9. Le premier chapitre présente l’étalon employé pour les monnaies en argent, ainsi que le monnayage en ce métal des royaumes de Marion, de Kition, de Paphos et de Salamine, durant le Ve siècle. Il est suivi du catalogue, qui propose l’étude par coins des monnaies d’or réunies dans les collections publiques et privées ainsi que dans les catalogues de ventes. Il présente également les fausses monnaies. Les chapitres suivants procèdent à l’analyse du matériel et proposent des études métrologiques et métallographiques afin de révéler, d’une part l’étalon et les dénominations attestées pour les monnaies d’or, et d’autre part la qualité du métal. Les choix iconographiques, les légendes monétaires et la circulation de ce monnayage en or sont également discutés dans le chapitre de l’étude comparée. Dans le sixième chapitre, la politique monétaire des rois chypriotes et l’histoire de l’île au IVe siècle sont analysés à l’aide des témoignages monétaires, littéraires, épigraphiques et archéologiques. Le dernier chapitre présente les émissions en or des rois perses ainsi que celles attestées en Grèce et développe le contexte dans lequel le monnayage en or des rois de chypre a été produit. Tout à la fin deux annexes sont proposées. L’une présente le fonctionnement de la royauté à Chypre, l’autre, réuni les textes de la littérature ancienne mentionnés dans l’étude.
