This thesis presents a work of John Chrysostom : Consolation to Stagirios (CPG 4310). The six-chapters introduction starts with examining the sequence of printed editions before bringing out the main features of the work itself : an original Christian consolation where John Chrysostom's views together with his humane and stylistic qualities are already indisputably noticeable. The work is mostly interesting insofar as it puts forward a clear and coherent reasoning about the issue of suffering, particularly about despondency by turning to such ideas as Providence and man's freedom to choose, as well as to many biblical examples in a Chrysostomian re-reading that happens to look singular. Then follows a new translation into French of the three books of the work from the Greek version of the PG (PG 47, 423-494). Notes at the bottom of the pages provide the reader with explanations and comparisons. A scriptural index, then an index of the Greek words and finally a few appendices about the former translations complete this thesis.

Cette thèse présente une oeuvre de Jean Chrysostome, la Consolation à Stagire (CPG 4310). Une introduction en six chapitres dégage, après une enquête sur l'histoire des éditions imprimées, les caractéristiques de l'ouvrage: une consolation chrétienne originale, où la pensée et les qualités humaines et stylistiques de Jean Chrysostome sont déjà bien présentes. L'intérêt principal de l'oeuvre est d'offrir une argumentation claire et cohérente sur le problème de la souffrance, et notamment sur le découragement (athumia) , en faisant appel aux notions de Providence et de liberté de choix de l'homme, ainsi qu'à des exemples bibliques nombreux, dans une relecture chrysostomienne parfois curieuse. Les trois livres de l'oeuvre font ensuite l'objet d'une traduction nouvelle en français, à partir du texte grec de la PG (vol. 47, col. 423-494). Des notes en bas de page apportent explications et comparaisons. Un index scripturaire, un index des mots grecs, des annexes concernant les traductions anciennes terminent ce travail.
