The dissertation deals with the presence of autobiographical extracts in the writings of Galen, physician and writer born in Pergamum in the II century A. D. , according to the aims he followed in his works, to his public, and with an eye to the literary features he used. The study is based on the literary analysis and the commentary of selected autobiographical extracts followed, in most cases, by an italian translation. The work contains a Premise dealing with methodological aspects, and three sections. The Premise, in which the history of the studies on this subject is also discussed, deals with the application of the definition of autibiography as “autobiografical treaty” to the literary production of Galen. Three sections follow: the first one analyses the matters which persuaded the author to write about himself; the second one studies the composition of the public of readers interested in Galen’s writings; the third one, which is the largest, discusses the strategies by which Galen conceived his autobiographical extracts. In the appendix there are an index of quoted works and a general bibliography.

La thèse traite de la présence de récits autobiographiques dans les écrits de Galien, médecin et écrivain né à Pergame au IIeme siècle après J. C. , en rapport avec les objectifs poursuivis dans son œuvre, avec le public visé, et en tenant compte des moyens littéraires utilisés. L’étude se base sur l’analyse littéraire et le commentaire d’une sélection de récits autobiographiques accompagnés, pour la plupart, d’une traduction italienne. Le travail comprend une introduction, de caractère méthodologique, et trois sections. Dans l’introduction, dans laquelle est aussi esquissée l’histoire des études relative à la matière, on discute de l’applicabilité du concept d’autobiographie comme « pacte autobiographique » à la production littéraire de Galien. Suivent trois sections : la première section analyse les motivations qui conduisent l’auteur à se raconter lui-même ; la deuxième section étudie la composition du public des lecteurs de Galien ; enfin la troisième section, la plus ample, discute des formalités avec lesquelles Galien structure ses récits autobiographiques. En appendice figurent un index des passages cités et une bibliographie générale.
