Heir to a long tradition but adding to it an original individual experience, Ammianus Marcellinus has elaborated in his work a concept of space as a combination of space and time. The geographical digressions included in his work describe some parts of the Roman Empire as rational areas, presented in geometrical sketches. These are also dynamic and have evolved in time from savagery to civilization. Such was the work of Rome and the historian in his time still regards this city as the symbolic animating power of its area. On the contrary, the space of the nomads appears as an indistinct area, linked with the savagery of its people. Between these two poles, Persia, original in space and time, juxtaposes savagery and refinement in a static structure, and is thereby definitely alien to Rome.

Héritier d'une longue tradition qu'il enrichit d'une expérience personnelle originale, Ammien Marcellin a développé dans son œuvre une conception de l'espace comme un espace-temps. Les digressions géographiques qui émaillent son œuvre présentent différentes parties de l'Empire romain comme des espaces rationnels, sous la forme de schématisations géométriques. Ces ensembles sont de plus dynamiques, des constructions temporelles passées de la sauvagerie à la civilisation. Telle a été l'œuvre de Rome, à laquelle l'historien conserve encore en son temps un rôle d'animatrice symbolique de son espace. A l'inverse, les espaces des nomades apparaissent comme des aires indifférenciées où l'absence de structure est liée à la sauvagerie des populations. Entre ces deux pôles, la perse est un espace-temps original, juxtaposant barbarie et raffinement en un complexe statique et, de ce fait, irréductiblement hostile à Rome.
