L'imaginaire du lien dans les romans de Roger Frison-Roche

Our focus is on the imaginative dimension of Roger Frison-Roche’s fictional work, which has more often than not been taken into consideration only from a documentary or ethnographic angle. Based on an awareness that, like their creator, the characters in these novels are wanderers, this study questions what triggers their setting off and their progress. Their quest, which turns out to be both an initiation and a salvation, enables them to free themselves from the fatal bonds that restrained them and to tie new, positive bonds. Indeed, those characters cross through mythical or primeval regions to reach the sacred, and yet, in spite of their nomadism, they are firmly rooted in a certain territory and a certain community. Thanks to his writing, which used to be improperly labeled as reporting or documenting, the artist makes the communion with the spiritual world as well as with other men possible; he links the individual and the universal together. Throughout this study, the profusion of images and symbols based on bonds is therefore shown to be ambivalent: bonds are either fetters that are severed, or ties that are established, and these novels celebrate the transition from one to the other.

Il s’agit de s’intéresser à la dimension imaginaire de l’oeuvre romanesque de Roger Frison-Roche, alors qu’on n’en retient le plus souvent que le caractère documentaire et ethnographique. Constatant que les personnages de ces romans sont, à l’instar de leur créateur, des itinérants, nous nous interrogeons sur ce qui déclenche leur départ et leur cheminement. Leur quête qui s’avère initiatique et salvatrice leur permet de se libérer des liens fatals qui les emprisonnaient et de nouer d’autres liens, positifs cette fois. En effet, ils traversent des espaces mythiques, originels, et accèdent au sacré. Nomades, ils s’enracinent néanmoins dans un territoire et une communauté. Par son écriture, que l’on a abusivement réduite au reportage ou au témoignage, l’artiste rend possible la communion tant avec le monde spirituel qu’avec les autres hommes, il relie l’individu à l’universel. Tout au long de notre étude, la profusion d’images et de symboles du lien se révèle donc ambivalente : le lien peut être entrave que l’on rompt, ou liaison que l’on établit. Ces romans célèbrent le passage de l’un à l’autre.
