Salvat Etchart is an underrated writer. Born in the bordeaux region, he is thirty years old when he settles in Martinique. Fifteen years later, he leaves for Canada where he will commit suicide in 1985, leaving a six-volume heritage of works of fiction. The five stages of this study relate the journey of a writer in quest of identity, rejecting our occidental society, attempting to identify to the west indian culture and finally, taking refuge in his disintegrated tortured ego. Along a biographical axis, this work also analyses the slow destructurting of salvat etchart's writing parallel to his ego's disintegration.

Salvat Etchart est un écrivain méconnu. D’origine bordelaise, il part a trente ans pour la Martinique ; quinze ans plus tard il émigre au Canada où il se donnera la mort en 1985, laissant une œuvre romanesque de six volumes. Cette étude retrace en cinq étapes le parcours d'un écrivain en quête d'identité : refus de la société occidentale, tentative d'identification à la culture antillaise, reflux, enfin, vers un moi fragmenté et problématique. Elle analyse aussi, parallèlement à l'axe biographique, une écriture qui s'effrite à mesure que le moi de l'écrivain se défait.
