This work presents an annotated retranscription of the correspondence between André Lhote (1885-1962) a cubist painter and art critic and Jean Paulhan (1884-1968) a writer, critic and director of La NRF. The issues raised by this correspondence were studied from the point of view of art criticism. This study starts with an analysis of the reasons which prompted André Lhote to produce a discourse on art, on the conceptions of painting defended by each of the two critics and on their divergences. It then attempts to define the more formal specificities of Lhote's criticism –between theory, aesthetic judgement and history of art– and that of Paulhan –between enchantment and fantasy–. The last part of this work focuses on the information provided in the letters, mostly about Lhote, both at a personal and professional level, exclusively within the scope of his activities at La N. R. F.

Ce travail propose la retranscription annotée de la correspondance entre André Lhote (1885-1962), peintre cubiste et critique d'art, et Jean Paulhan (1884-1968) écrivain, critique, directeur de La N. R. F. Les problématiques soulevées par la correspondance ont été étudiées sous l'angle de la critique artistique. Sont d'abord analysées les raisons pour lesquelles André Lhote a éprouvé le besoin de produire un discours sur l'art, puis les conceptions de la peinture défendues par chacun des correspondants, enfin leurs divergences. Cette étude s'attache ensuite à définir les spécificités plus formelles de la critique lhotienne –entre théorie, jugement esthétique et histoire de l'art– et paulhanienne –entre enchantement et fantaisie–. La dernière partie est consacrée aux informations fournies, essentiellement sur Lhote, par la correspondance, tant sur le plan personnel que sur le plan professionnel dans le strict cadre de son activité à La N. R. F.
