The purpose of this dissertation is to study the emergence of contemporary black conservatism, an African American political ideology which stands as an alternative to the liberal integrationism of the established black leadership. This leadership is ideologically, strategically & politically united. Existing essays generally ignore or misinterpret the meaning of black conservatism. We were interested in studying, from a sociopolitical perspective, its principles & characteristics, as well as the aims of its partisans. Black conservatives have indeed launched an attack on the African American political elite and tried to form an alliance with the Republican Party. We then conducted an empirical analysis of the impact of this ideology on African Americans, as well as on the political elite, in order to understand their political influence. Finally we studied the relationship between them, the elite, and parties. Black conservatism has modified the relationship between African Americans and their political elite, and even though the successes of its advocates are rare, it has transformed the African American political landscape. The political elite is today under a severe crisis worsened by its frustrated renewal efforts and a hostile political context. Fluctuating between unity and diversity, it is in a state of transition which might lead to its disappearance or bring about its regeneration.

Cette thèse porte sur l'émergence du conservatisme noir contemporain, idéologie afro-américaine qui est posée comme alternative à l'intégrationnisme libéral embrassé par l'élite politique afro-américaine établie. Cette dernière demeure profondément unie, en termes d'idéologie, d'action politique et d'affiliation partisane. En raison de son caractère polémique, le conservatisme noir est peu ou mal étudié dans les travaux existants. Il s'agira donc en premier lieu de mieux comprendre, d'un point de vue sociopolitique, ses principes et spécificités, et d'analyser les ambitions de ses défenseurs. Les conservateurs noirs ont en effet lancé une attaque contre l'élite politique afro-américaine, et tenté de se rapprocher du Parti républicain. Nous utiliserons ensuite des données empiriques pour mesurer l'impact de cette idéologie sur les Afro-Américains, puis chercherons à évaluer son impact sur l'élite afro-américaine, afin de savoir si les conservateurs noirs ont réussi à se construire en tant que force politique. Enfin, nous étudierons les liens qui existent entre les conservateurs noirs, l'élite politique afro-américaine, et les partis. Le conservatisme noir a modifié les rapports entre les Afro-Américains et leur élite, et malgré les succès marginaux des hommes qui y adhèrent, a transformé le paysage politique afro-américain. L'élite, quant à elle, subit aujourd'hui une crise aggravée par des tentatives de renouvellement avortées et un contexte politique défavorable. Oscillant entre unité et diversité, elle vit une période de transition qui aboutira soit à sa disparition, soit à sa régénérescence.
