The originality of Edith Wharton’s novels and short stories lies in her presentation of the image of woman. Partaking simultaneously of the genteel heroine, the realist heroine and the feminist heroine without belonging exclusively to one of these categories, the Wharton heroine is first and foremost the account given by a human being of her fight against the sufferings of woman in a country, a moment and a social clan where it was particularly difficult to be a woman, and what is worse, a woman-writer.

L'originalité des romans et nouvelles d'Edith Wharton se trouve dans leur présentation de l'image de la femme. Participant à la fois de la "genteel heroine", de l'héroïne réaliste et de l'héroïne féministe, sans pour autant appartenir exclusivement à l'une de ces catégories, l'héroïne whartonienne est avant tout le témoignage d'un être, Edith Wharton, et de son combat contre la souffrance d'être femme à une époque, dans un pays et un milieu où il était particulièrement difficile d'être femme, pire encore, femme-écrivain.
