This thesis related and examines the history of the american artistic community "expatriated" in paris between 1914 and 1939. We have jointher analyzed the works of american and afroamerican artists with the aim of studing the role peayed by paris in the elaboration and assertion of an american artistic identity. This community toole advantage of this americanism which l'expressed itself in the french avant-garde - montparnasse was hime specifically affected by this american vogue we have followed those artists in the places where they trained themselves and exhibited their worko. We dealt with there relationship with other artistic communities in paris. An important place was given a the afro-american artists who, in the context of "art nefro", jazz and the negritude movement, become mowe aware of the richness of their african heritage. We introduced the art of these artists in the franco-american cultural context of that time. On can see, on the french side, the elaboration of an artistic propagande aimihg at estasliching a french art market in the wirted shetes.

Cette these retrace et examine l'histoire de la communaute artistique americaine "expatriee" a paris entre 1914 et 1939. Nous avons analyse conjointement l'oeuvre des artistes americains et afro-americains, le but essentiel etant d'etudier le role de paris dans la formation et affirmation d'une identite artistique americaine. Cette communaute profita a paris de ce courant "americaniste" qui se manifesta particulierement dans l'avant-garde montparnasse notamment, fut directement concerne par cette mode americaine. Nous avons suivi ces artistes dans les lieux ou ils se sont formes et ou ils ont expose leur travail. Nous avons traite de leurs relations et de leurs echanges avec les autres communautes artistiques. Nous avons accorde une place importante aux artistes noirs americains que, dans le contexte de l'art negre, du jazz et de la negritude, ont pris davantage conscience de la richesse de leur heritage africain. Enfin, noirs avons tenu a introduire l'oeuvre de l'ensemble de cette communaute dans le contexte culturel franco-americain de l'epoque. On voit ainsi s'elaborer, du cote francais, une politique de propagande artistique visant a installer sur le marche de l'art francais en amerique.
