The analysis is based on 381 french-canadian novels published between 1896 and 1970. After a concise overview of the evolution of the french-canadian novel in the more global context of social and cinematographical evolution in french canada, the author proceeds to a quantitative analysis of the collected data. This analysis demonstrates that male characters are equally interested in cinema as female characters ; that the infatuation for movie stars is mainly described by male, rather than female, writers ; and that this fascination is directed equally towards stars of both genders. This statistical analysis also indicates the double cultural adherence (french and anglo-american) of french canadian writers. The other chapters are devoted to a qualitative analysis of the explicit references to cinema. The author attempts to outline how the female and male writers present cinema in its links to society, individuals, the notion of reality and finally, how cinema is integrated to "l'ecriture romanesque" (the aesthetics of the novel). In conclusion, the author retains the important role played by cinema in the transformation of collective mentality, as expressed in french-canadian novels.

Le corpus repose sur 381 romans canadien-francais publies entre 1896 et 1970. Apres avoir brosse un rapide tableau de l'evolution du roman canadien-francais et de l'implantation du cinema en les situant dans le contexte plus global de l'evolution sociale, l'auteur procede a une analyse quantitative des donnees recueillies. Celle-ci a permis de demontrer que les personnages masculins s'interessent autant au cinema que les personnages feminins, que l'engouement pour les vedettes est surtout raconte par les romanciers (et non les romancieres) et que cette admiration concerne autant les vedettes masculines que feminines. D'autre part, cette analyse statistique a clairement demontre la double appartenance culturelle du canada francais. Les autres chapitres sont consacres a l'analyse qualitative des occurences explicites du cinema dans les romans. L'auteure a tente de degager comment les romanciers et romancieres presentent le cinema dans ses rapports avec la societe, avec l'individu, avec la notion de realite et, dans un dernier temps, comment le cinema s'integre a l'ecriture romanesque. Les conclusions montrent que les romanciers conferent au cinema, dans leurs romans, un role important dans la transformation de la mentalite canadiennefrancaise.
