The present study focuses on the historical development of the Arab community in the United States from 1880 to 1990. It sheds light on the religious institutions, associations, ethnic marriage, socio-economic status, literature and political behavior of the Arab immigrants. This study is based on a fieldwork in the area of Washington, D. C. It shows that religion largely influenced the assimilation of the early Christian Arab immigrants (1880-1948). However, politics (in the Middle East) contributed to their ethnicity (1948-1990). On the other hand, the political background of the Arab Muslims has a deep impact on their political integration in the United States, but their religion influences their social and cultural adaptation.

Le présent travail porte sur l'analyse de l'assimilation et de l'ethnicité des arabes aux États-Unis à la lumière de deux paramètres fondamentaux, en l'occurrence la politique et la religion. Nous avons adopté une approche chronologique (de 1890 à 1990) des institutions religieuses, des associations, de la littérature, de l'organisation sociale (mariage ethnique, famille élargie, statut socio-économique) et du comportement politique. Nous avons démontré que la religion a été un facteur assimilateur dans l'expérience des arabes chrétiens. La politique est au fondement de leur réveil ethnique. En revanche, la politique contribue à l'intégration, notamment politique et institutionnelle, des arabes musulmans, mais la religion est une force de désintégration sociale chez eux.
