This thesis adresses the obvious relationship between myth and writing in Cormac Mc Carthy's first five novels. Mc carthy's writing produces a "crisis between differences" which, however, does not lead to a resolution according to rene girard's system. Violence, like words, continues to proliferate and never makes sense. The issue of the function of myth in the work had to be examined : does it appear as theme, underlying structure or writing ? The mythological themes basically rely on analogy; deeper, metaphorical structures can be found; finally, writing mythology emphasizes the mythology of writing; this mythology also has remote origins, which are sometimes summoned, and sometimes kept at a distance. Therefore, it is a "landscape of writing" which is depicted by mc carthy, since reality is shown as the producer of stories and inscriptions, on the one hand, and as the depository of those fictions, on the other hand. From this multi-layered writing process emerges the myth which is particular to each novel : but only reading can reveal it.
