Through the regionalist trait attributed to her work, elizabeth madox roberts (1881-1941) is regarded as a complex and neglected writer, on the fringe of other contemporary southern writers. Ill-health and a deeply reserved personality prompted her to live in a soul-centered universe, with little concern for the modern xxth world. As a craftsman in fiction, she infused the realities of her native and rural kentucky, with nature as a definite entity. She writes of the humble and the "poor-whites", and depicts the life of strongly individualized heroines, transfigured by an inner light. Focusing on the prevalence of the mind-patterned motivated by the will to approach the ineffable, her fiction is underlain by the philosophy of george berkeley. Henceforward, her novels do not only compose a social chronicle of the kentucky rural people inasmuch as her philosophic and humanely approach endows them with a universal appeal.

Au travers du caractere regionaliste attribue a son oeuvre, elizabeth madox roberts (1881-1941) apparait comme une romanciere complexe et meconnue, en marge des autres ecrivains du sud. Dotee d'une sante precaire et d'une personnalite tres reservee, l'auteur connait une evolution toute interieure sur laquelle les influences novatrices du xxe siecle ont peu de prises. Faisant acte de creation imaginaire, roberts s'appuie toutefois sur la realite de son kentucky natal et rural, ou la nature joue un role determinant. C'est avant tout un ecrivain des humbles et des "petits blancs", qui presente la vie d'heroines fortement individualisees, transfigurees par une lumiere interieure. Centree sur la primaute de la conscience dynamisee par la volonte d'approcher l'ineffable, l'oeuvre de la romanciere est sous-tendue par la philosophie de george berkeley. Ses romans ne constituent donc pas seulement une chronique sociale des petits fermiers du kentucky dans la mesure ou son approche humaine et philosophique leur confere une dimension universelle.
