This thesis reports the evolution of a city and her surroundings area, as far as they are not separable. Guadalajara had 3000 inhabitants in 1600 and 10000 in 1700. Her pecularity arises both from her position as a political and religious capital and as a pioneer region of the colonial mexico. Conceived as an attempt of global urban history, this thesis studies three levels of reality: demography underlines the importance of cross-breeding and illegitimity economy is dominated, at urban scale, by tertiary activity and at regional scale by flow of exchanges: money and cattle in one way, manufactured products (textiles) in the other way. On the social and cultural level, guadalajara is more an hispanic and even afro-mexican world than an indian one. It is clear that guadalajara, then, is not representative of the xviith century's mexico. However she affords many elements to understand the xxth century's mexico in its cross-breeding features.

Cette these retrace l'evolution d'une ville (et de sa region dans la mesure ou les deux sont indissociables) qui avait 3000 habitants vers 1600 et 10000 en 1700. Son originalite provient a la fois de son role de capitale politique et religieuse, et de sa position sur la frange pionniere du mexique colonial. Concue comme une tentative d'histoire urbaine totale cette these s'attaque a trois niveaux de la realite: la demographie met en valeur l'importance du metissage et de l'illegitimite. L'economie est au niveau urbain celle d'une ville tertiaire; a l'echelle regionale cette economie est dominee par les flux d'echanges: argent et troupeaux dans un sens, produits manufactures (textiles) dans l'autre. Au niveau social et culturel, guadalajara constitue un monde plus hispanique et meme afro-mexicain qu'indigene. Il est indeniable que le mexique d'alors ne saurait guere s'y identifier. Mais elle detient bon nombre de cles du mexique metisse du xxe siecle.
