The French presence in Brazil from the second half of the XVIth century up to the first quarter of the XVIIth century is analyzed in the light of the definition of the relation towards the Other. The study is concentrated around three great axes : 1. The Other : the European adversary in the region he considers as his inalienable possession ; 2. The Other : the Amerindian partner and allied ; 3. The Other: the country, its political and economic potential, and also its allegoric and moral image. This presence is considered as a complex phenomenon which can’t be restricted to the attempts of the "ephemeral colonization" of the second half of the XVIth century and of the first quarter of the XVIIth century.

La présence française au Brésil de la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle jusqu'au premier quart du XVIIe est analysée à travers le prisme de la construction d'une relation à l'Autre, et selon trois axes privilégiés : 1. L'Autre : l'adversaire européen dans une région qu'il considère comme étant son domaine inaliénable ; 2. L'Autre : le partenaire et l'allié amérindien ; 3. L'Autre : le pays, son potentiel politique et économique, mais aussi son image allégorique et morale. Cette présence est considérée comme un phénomène complexe qui ne se résume pas aux tentatives de la "colonisation éphémère" encadrée par le milieu du XVIe siècle et le début du XVIIe.
