The purpose of this thesis is to show the complexity of instrumental making in rom (organogical study from archaeological, iconographic sources and literary descriptions) and to replace the stringed instruments in the roman society, in showing the status of the musicians, the muical places, the circumstances (competitions, games) and the symbolic aspect attached to those instruments.

Cette these a pour but de montrer la complexite de la facture instrumentale a rome (etude organologique a partir des sources archeologiques, figurees et des descriptions litteraires) et de replacer les instruments a cordes dans la societe romaine en montrant le statut des musiciens, les lieux de la musique, les circonstances (concours, jeux) et l'aspect symbolique attache a ces instruments.
