This thesis analyses 40 years of the activities and debates of french socialists and the european socialist parties adhering to the 2nd international concerning the political and economic direction in the communes. The methodology used is based on urban social history, von movements and political thought at the turn of th xx century. It is divided into three parts: the birth of municipal socialism in france and abroad during the 1880s and 1890s; the debates on the question of municipal interention and "regie directe" at the beginning of the xx century; the socialist party sfio, the world of work and municipal socialism, 1905-1914, with particular attention to the political life of paris and its suburbs and the municipal involvement of the federation socialiste de la seine. The conclusion deals with municipal socialist politics during the great war and afterwards (1914-1920).

La these analyse quarante ans d'action et de debats des socialistes francais et des partis socialistes europeens adherents a la deuxieme internationale en ce qui concerne la direction politique et economique dans les communes. Il s'agit d'un travail methodologiquement fonde sur l'histoire sociale urbaine et sur l'histoire des mouvements et de la pensee politique au tournant du xxe siecle. Il est divise en trois parties concernants: la naissance du socialisme municipal en france et a l'etranger pendant les annees '80 et '90; les debats sur la question de l'intervention municipale et de la regie directe au debut du xxe siecle; la sfio, le monde du travail et le socialisme municipal, 1905-1914, avec une particuliere attention a la vie politique de paris et de sa banlieue et a l'action municipale de la federation socialiste de la seine. Les conclusions tratent de la politique socialiste municipale pendant la grande guerre et l'apres-guerre, 1914-1920.
