La duplicite du chasseur : comportement juvenile et pratique cynegetique en grece ancienne aux epoques archaique et classique

For the ancient greeks hunting was not only a means of relieving themselves of wild animals, a way of obtaining meat for food, it was also the distinct sign of mankind which was right away from the beasts and from the gods. As such, hunting gives the possibility of laying the foundations of anthropology and of vindicating the place of man in the city, and the place of the city in the world. Therefore the chasing and the capture of the animal are expounded, in greece, by a series of symbols. Philosophical enquiry, political metaphor, erotic vocabulary play with hunting as with an exhaustible pool for similes and images. I tried therefore to analyse the various aspects of hunting practice in epic poetry, tragedy, history and philosophy. Hunting is regularly represented in vase painting from the viith century to the ivth century. The investigation led me, then, to the interpretation of vase pictures. Through the appearing, the development of the modifications of them, i endeavoured to find the path for a social history which gives a privilegied place to youth behaviour. The confrontation of texts with pictures sketching this history and thus, the discovery of a somehow concealed part of the city face.

La chasse n'est pas seulement pour les grecs un moyen de se debarrasser des animaux sauvages, une facon de se procurer de la nourriture carnee, elle est le signe radical d'une humanite a bonne distance des animaux et des dieux. En ce sens, la chasse permet de fonder une anthropologie de justifier la place de l'homme dans la cite et de la cite dans le monde. La poursuite et la capture de l'animal en grece sont donc investies par une serie de symboles : quete philosophique, metaphore politique, vocabulaire erotique jouent de la chasse comme d'un reservoir d'images inepuisable. J'ai donc tente d'analyser les differentes dimensions de la pratique cynegetique dans l'epopee, la tragedie et le genre historique ou philosophique. Du viiieme au iveme siecles, la figuration de la chasse est une constante de la peinture sur vase. L'enquete m'a donc conduit a l'interpretation des representations figurees. A travers l'apparition, le developpement ou la modification des themes, je me suis attache a retrouver la piste d'une histoire sociale qui donne une place privilegiee aux comportements juveniles. Cette histoire, la confrontation des textes et des images permet de l'esquisser et, ce faisant, de devoiler une part du visage parfois secret de la cite.
