During the elaboration of his religious doctrine and the fight he carried out against the almoravides, ibn tumart was promted by a will to teach the genuine islamic faith and found a religious law-abiding communauty. His writhings consist of opuscules and recensions of the hadiths aimed to a religious background for the barber tribesthat backed him. Even that his attachment to islamic sources is evident, we notice that he was deeply influenced by some beliefs on the apparearance of mahdi and on the vital role that people of maghreb should play inestablishing the religion. The harsh struggle that pitted him against both the almoravides and the malkit jurists added to the difficulty of making sure of his followers, loyalty count for some of his uncomprimising stances and his firmness in ruling his troops.

Dans l'elaboration de sa doctrine religieuse et dans l'action qu'il a poursuivi contre les almoravides, ibn tumart fut anime d'une volonte d'enseigner la veritable foi islamique et de fonder une communaute respectueuse de la loi religieuse. Ses ecrits sont composes d'opuscules et de recensions de hadiths destines a la formation des tribus berberes qui l'ont soutenues. Si son attachement aux sources de l'islam apparait evident, nous constatons cependant qu'il fut profondement influence par certaines croyances sur l'apparition du mahdi, et sur le role privilegie que les gens du maghreb devraient joue dans la restauration de la religion. La lutte violente qu'il a oppose aux almoravides et aux juristes malikites, et la difficulte de s'assurer la fidelite de ses partisants expliquent certaines de ses positions intransigeantes et sa fermete dans la direction de ses troupes.
