Esthétique des cires anatomiques de Gaetano Giulio Zumbo (1656-1701) à Pierre Spitzner (1834-1896)

The settlement of a corpus of anatomical models in wax reveals that aesthetic opinions were bound to the elaboration of objects still dependents of the history of medicine. The outcrops of these opinions can be observed through the particularities of the material wax and its uses, the presentations and the effects of presence of life-size figures, their powers of illusion and seduction, the tension to an ideal imitation of organic forms. Following the chronological development of the production of these sculptures it is observed according to the authors (anatomists and wax modellers), an oscillation between expressions terrified or amazed of a flesh till that time invisible. Beyond their pedagogic function, beyond the justification of artistic and academic anatomy these works continue to traduce in a plastic and sensitive way, the human body as a vector susceptible to unite art to sacred.

L'etablissement d'un corpus des modeles anatomiques en cire revele que des opinions esthetiques furent liees a l'elaboration d'objets encore dependants de l'histoire de la medecine. Les affleurements de ces opinions s'observent a travers les particularites d'une matiere telle que la cire et ses usages, les presentations et les effets de presence des mannequins, leurs pouvoirs d'illusion et de seduction, la tension vers l'imitation ideale des formes organiques. En suivant le developpement chronologique de la production de ces sculptures, on peut observer selon les auteurs, une oscillation entre l'expression terrifiee ou emerveillee d'une chair jusque la invisible. Au-dela de leur fonction pedagogique et academique, ces oeuvres continuent a traduire de maniere plastique et sensible le corps humain comme vecteur susceptible d'unir l'art au sacre.
