Tony Cragg belongs to the Young English Sculpture Movement, alive in the 80's. Cragg's thought process is backed by strong coherence. Attached to the figure, the landscape and the object, he travels through by associating them, in a process that ranges from the reuse of the object to the finding of forms underlined by the themes of hybridisation and metamorphosis. The three basic structure, the particles, the layers and the skin, have been put into process and associated with one another. Both these basic elements in his artistic language are helping a process of discovery that put the material in question in its diversity, from a visual, aesthetic and scientific point of view, namely the inner structure of this material. The dematerialising process becomes an object of knowledge. Structural analogy as creative process allows him to convey the reality and art to become a "thinking model" for many of scientific subjects. He uses seduction as a weapon to appeal to he on-looker's eye.

Tony Cragg est rattaché à la Jeune Sculpture Anglaise des années 80. La lecture suivie de son oeuvre (1970-2000) étudie son apparente diversité stylistique, mais sa démarche fait preuve d'une grande cohérence. Attaché aux trois genres (figure, objet, paysage) il les décline en les associant, du rézmploi de l'objet à l'invention de formes sous-tendues par les thématiques: l'hybridation et la métamorphose. Il décline et associe trois structures de base (particules, strates, peau). Cragg utilise ce vocabulaire dans un processus de découverte questionnant le matériau dans sa plus grande diversité, du point de vue visuel, plastique, technique et scientifique, il en interroge la structure interne. Le processus de dématérialisation est une quête de connaissance. L'analogie structurale, outil de création, lui permet de rendre compte du réel et son art devient un "modèle à penser" dans différents domaines scientifiques. Par sa volonté de produire une oeuvre esthétique, il séduit le spectateur.
