La défense avancée de Saint-Malo au temps de Siméon Garengeau (1689-1741)

At the end of the 17th century, the engineer Simeon Garengeau constructed several "sea fortresses" in Saint-Malo, which for almost two centuries sheltered the port and the town from enemy invasion. The study of these fortresses has been examined in four stages: a presentation of the principal actors who participated in their realization, an overall reflection concerning the choices which governed their establishment as well as their conception and construction, an analysis of each of these fortifications, a valuation of the effectiveness of this system that the study of the anglo-dutch "bombarderies" of November 1693 and of July 1695 reveal. The research provides elements which may be of interest to specialists in fields of French military history and the history of Saint-Malo.

A la fin du XVIIème siècle, l'ingénieur Siméon Garengeau a édifié à Saint-Malo plusieurs "forts à la mer" qui ont pendant près de deux siècles mis le port et la ville à l'abri des entreprises ennemies. L'étude de ces forts a été conduite en quatre temps : présentation des principaux acteurs qui ont œuvré à leur réalisation; réflexion d'ensemble sur les choix qui ont présidé à leur implantation ainsi qu'à leur conception et à leur construction; analyse de chacun de ces ouvrages; appréciation de l'efficacité du système ainsi mis en place grâce à l'étude des "bombarderies" anglo-hollandaises de novembre 1693 et de juillet 1695. Cette étude tente d'apporter des éléments qui peuvent intéresser tant les spécialistes de l'histoire de l'architecture militaire française que ceux de l'histoire malouine.
