The church's ability to modernity can be seen in the changes to the form and structure of church building, as well as the links with urbanisation, as the study of churches built or re-constructed in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais between 1945 and 2000 reveals. Looking at the mechanics of the commissioning, the main players and stakeholders of the church building process - church, state, local government, builders and craftsmen – this thesis try to understand how the area of church-building, between 1945 and 2000, is a reflection of the connection between the different parts of contemporary society and of the development of those links during half a century. The first part considers the re-construction of churches destroyed during the 2nd World War (1945-1965). The second part presents the new buildings of the "Trente Glorieuses" (1945-1971). The third and last part concerns church building during the most recent period (1971-2000).

L'adaptation de l'Église à la modernité est visible dans les mutations formelles et structurelles du bâtiment-église, ainsi que dans ses rapports à l'urbanisme, tel que le révèle l'étude des églises reconstruites et construites dans le Nord-Pas-de-Calais entre 1945 et 2000. En observant les mécanismes de la commande, ses acteurs et les enjeux de la construction d'église pour chacun d'eux – Église, État, société civile, créateurs –, cette thèse montre en quoi le chantier d'église, entre 1945 et 2000, est le réflecteur des rapports entre les différentes composantes de la société contemporaine et de l'évolution de ces rapports sur un demi siècle. La première partie porte sur les reconstructions d'églises détruites pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale (1945-1965). La seconde partie présente les constructions nouvelles des Trente Glorieuses (1945-1971). La troisième et dernière partie concerne les chantiers d'église de la période la plus récente (1971-2000)
