Une gloire de la Saintonge médiévale, le déploiement des chevets : évolution des dispositions structurelles et des systèmes décoratifs des chevets dans les églises romanes du diocèse de Saintes (XI-XIVe siècle)

With its 650 chevets, Saintonge is one of the most important artistic place of the French Middle Age. The chevets held the attention of the artists who considered them as reliquaires, proving by Art (diversity of the plans, the silhouettes and the decoration) their liturgical importance. After an introduction pointing out the subject of the study (with the delicate terminological nuance of "chevet", "choir" and "sanctuary") and a historical chapter about the old diocese, the results of this research submitted in a chronological plan, show the first experimentations (2/3 of XIth century). To begin with is discussed the diffusion of the forms in XIIth century. Then, by taking into account how the previous solutions were improved, the author, by a thorough study of the architecture and the sculptures of a great number of Roman chevets of the Saintonge, shows the originality of these productions among works of the West and South West of France. Finally the delicate passage to the modalities of the Gothic period (XIIIth and XIVth century) is studied

Avec ses 650 chevets, la Saintonge constitue un des fleurons artistiques du Moyen Âge français. Ils ont retenu l'attention des artistes qui les ont traités comme des reliquaires, affirmant par l'art (diversité des plans, des silhouettes et du décor) leur importance liturgique. Après une introduction rappelant l'objet de l'étude (avec la subtile nuance terminologique entre "chevet", "chœur", "sanctuaire") et un chapitre historique sur l'ancien diocèse, les résultats de cette recherche, présentés selon un plan chronologique, soulignent les premières expériences (2/3 du XIe s. ). Vient ensuite la diffusion des formes au XIIe s. Là, en voyant comment les situations antérieures furent enrichies, l'auteur, par une étude formelle architecturale et sculptée d'un grand nombre de chevets romans saintongeais, montre l'originalité de ces productions parmi les œuvres de l'Ouest et du Sud-Ouest français.
