Although this thesis bears a title which refers to regional history, its subject goes beyond the confined bounds of a matter of local interest. First of all, the currant was a crop whose exportation was vital for greece during the 19th century, being the product on which the economy of this small country was based, the "black gold" of greece. The development of the cultivation of the currant ensued the increased demand of this product in england - mainly between 1848-1875 - where it served as a basic ingredient in domestic pastry-making. The currant formed part of those legendary "objects" which were material proof of happiness among the english petit-bourgeois or middle classes. Used in pudding and cake recipes, it occupied the place of honour on the christmas dinner table, extolled by charles dickens as a sign of wealth and abundance in his novel a christmas carol. It is this same product (the uve passe for the venetians, the raisin de corinthe for the french, the corantken for the dutch), which, with time, became the object of clashes between local communities and their leaders, or the apple of discord among antagonistic commercial interests, at stake in the eastern mediterranean.

Bien que cette these porte un titre qui renvoie au domaine de l'histoire regionale, son sujet deborde le cadre etroit d'une question d'interet local. Tout d'abord, le raisin sec est le produit dont l'exportation est vitale pour la grece du xixeme siecle, le produit sur lequel se fonde l'economie de ce petit pays, l'or noir des grecs. Le developpement de la culture du raisin sec fait suite a la demande accrue de ce produit en angleterre - notamment durant la periode 1848-1875 - ou il etait une matiere premiere de la patisserie domestique. Le raisin sec fait partie de ces "objets" legendaires qui etaient la preuve materielle du bonheur de la famille bourgeoise et petite-bourgeoise anglaise. Utilise dans les recettes de pudding et de cakes, il est a l'honneur sur la table de noel, celebre par charles dickens comme un signe de richesse et d'abondance dans sa nouvelle a christmas carol. C'est ce meme produit (les uve passe des venitiens, les currants des anglais, les raisins de corinthe des francais, les corantken des hollandais) qui, avec le temps, est devenu l'objet des conflits entre les populations locales et leurs dirigeants, ou la pomme de discorde entre des interets commerciaux antagonistes, en jeu dans mediterranee orientale.
