The history of the two french cultural institutes in spain is not only symbolic of the scientific and artistic attraction exerted by spain but also of the need to curb the influence of other foreign powers. The experience proved difficult since there were six different political regimes during the seventy years in question. Furthermore, the existence of those institutes was threatened when the buildings were destroyed during the spanish civil war, but had constantly been at stake since they were controlled by three different bodies - the bordeaux university, the french ministry of education and the academy of fine arts in paris - whereas spanish authorities just behaved as mere disinterested observers.

Il s'agit de l'histoire de deux institutions culturelles en espagne, symboles de l'attrait scientifique et artistique de la peninsule iberique, mais aussi de la necessite de contrer l'influence d'autres puissances. Une aventure difficile, dans un pays qui a traverse six regimes politiques en soixante-dix ans. Une existence menacee par la destruction des batiments, durant la guerre civile espagnole. Un enjeu pour une tutelle ecartelee entre l'universite de bordeaux, le ministere francais de l'education nationale et l'academie des beaux-arts de paris, sous les yeux non desinteresses des autorites espagnoles.
