The Rothschild family flourished during the 19th century and although their financial and economic successes are well known to us, their architectural exploits are almost ignored. Established in the capitals of Frankfurt, London, Paris, Vienna and Naples, the family was responsible for commissioning over fifty homes throughout Europe. The first step of our research was to establish an inventory of the family's European architectural heritage. We identified, dated and attributed the structures, placed them within their contemporary architectural, geographic, social and family context and compared the finished work to the original plans. Our study was based on direct analysis of the homes supplemented by the use of unpublished documents found in the countries concerned. These details allowed us to consider all of the elements that shaped the final works, including the influence of the commissioners themselves and constituted one of the most interesting aspects of our project. Beyond this inventory, we sought to explore the creative exchanges between the family and the "artists", for their competitive nature fuelled the momentum behind each construction. . .

Dans la société du XIXe siècle, l'histoire de la famille Rothschild est exceptionnelle et domine toute la période. Si la réussite financière et économique des membres de la famille est bien connue, en revanche, ils le sont beaucoup moins comme bâtisseurs. On a oublié qu'ils ont édifié plus d'une cinquantaine de demeures à travers toute l’Europe, car ils étaient établis dans cinq capitales: Francfort, Londres, Paris, Vienne et Naples. La première étape de notre travail fut cet inventaire européen de leur patrimoine architectural. Identifier, dater, attribuer des œuvres, les mettre en rapport avec des projets permettant de restituer le processus créatif, resituer ces demeures dans le contexte architectural géographique, social et familial, déterminer le rôle des commanditaires, constituent l'un des grands pôles d'intérêt de ce travail. Nous avons privilégié la recherche des sources inédites, dans les cinq pays où ils étaient implantés et l'analyse des œuvres. Au-delà de ce travail d'inventaire, nous nous sommes intéressés aux commanditaires, à leurs goûts et à leurs choix et étudié le contexte social dans lequel ils se sont établis, intégrés et ont construit leurs demeures. Les échanges artistiques sont incessants entre les commanditaires et les artistes: la concurrence artistique est l'un des moteurs.
