Abstract EN:

For a long time the part situated on the eastern side of volubilis was considered as being at the origin of the ancient town which has been built prior to the arrival of the romans. Modest buildings, built close together and transformed many times occupied the site. This was generally attributed to the mauretanian period. Four kilns and several olive press installations can be found there today. However, the studies of the wall structures which were unearthed a long time ago, and excavations carried out on parts which were intact, have since called this idea into question. The only pre-roman remain is a large punic temple which, until now, had not been identified, and which appear to the oldest monument bearing witness to the fact that volubilis was indeed punic. Neither are there any hellenistic fortified walls. The buildings, together with the olive press must belong to the roman period. The eastern part of volubilis would appear to have been built during the period between the first and the third century a. D.

Abstract FR:

Ap. J. C.
