The aim of this thesis is to construct a history of alternate current transformer from about 1880 until the second world war. Its first part is about the invention of the transformer at the begining of 1880s. The analysis of the controversial debates on the new machine shows the opposition to alternating current among the most electricians. The second part covers the period from 1885 to 1905 ; the relationships between technical development of transformers and creation of alternating current networks are exposed. Two chapters describe the engineering research conducted by several academic and industrial engineers striving to solve major problems arising as transformers was used. The intent of these descriptions is to analyse the relationships between science and technology. The third part (1906-1939) is a period of transition from local network to regional alternating current transmission systems. The first chapter is an overview of french transfomer constructors. The last two chapters study the process of technical change according to the point of view of materials and the relationships between network and transformers.

Le but de cette these est de construire une histoire du transformateur et de son exploitation dans les reseaux de transport de l'energie electrique, depuis les annees 1880 jusqu'a la seconde guerre mondiale. Elle conprend une premiere partie consacree a l'invention du transformateur au debut des annees 1880. L'analyse des arguments polemiques echanges au sujet de la nouvelle machine montre l'opposition de la plupart des electriciens a l'emploi des courants alternatifs. La deuxieme partie couvre la periode allant de 1885 a 1905 ; les relations entre le developpement technique des transformateurs et l'installation des premieres distributions a courant alternatif y sont mises en evidence. Deux chapitres exposent le travail de recherches menees par des universitaires et des ingenieurs pour tenter de resoudre les problemes poses par le fonctionnement des transformateurs dans les nouvelles installations ; les relations entre science et technique sont au coeur de ces descriptions. La troisieme partie (1906-1939) aborde une periode ou les reseaux locaux s'etendent et se modernisent en reseaux regionaux interconnectes. Un premier chapitre veut faire le point sur l'industrie francaise de la construction des transformateurs. Les deux chapitres suivants etudient le changement technique suivant la double perspective des materiaux et des relations entre le reseau et les transformateurs.
