The limited state of our present knowledge of the history of the north-eastern part of the delta of the egyptian nile, as well as the different accounts of a history dominated by the phenomenon of geographical transformations, lead to basic research being given the priority in different disciplines. This thesis is therfore devoted to the sources of the history and geography of the lower eastern delta during the arab era, based on literary sources from which we have reproduced and translated important extracts. Although these sources sometimes contain contradictory information, they all clearly show, wether it be a question of the water-resource network, of the flora, or of the nature of the soil, on the one hand, or of inhabited space on the other, that the lower eastern delta undersent profound changes between the 11 th and 12 th centuries, i. E. At the very time when the economic and political situation of muslim egypt, and of the whole eastern mediterranean basin, was going through an indepth restruturing. The detailed study of two cities, tinnis and farama, also reaffirms the idea that the phenomenon of geographical transformations was both a continuous and an ancient one, which permits us to conclude that the history of the lower eastern delta is abowe all a history of the environment.

L'etat sommaire de nos connaissances actuelles sur l'histoire du nord-est du delta du nil egyptien et les differents temoignages d'une histoire dominee par le phenomene des transformations geographiques de la region, font que la priorite soit accordee a des recherches de base dans differentes disciplines. Celle-ci porte donc sur les fondements de l'histoire et la geographie du bas delta oriental a l'epoque arabe, a partir de sources dites litteraires dont nous avons reproduit et traduit des extraits. Les informations contenues dans ces sources sont certes diverses mais aussi repetitives et parfois contradictoires ou anachroniques. Toutefois, les differents temoignages demontrent clairement, qu'il s'agisse du reseau hydrographique, du couvert vegetal ou de la nature du sol, d'une part, ou de l'espace vecu, d'autre part, que le bas delta oriental a connu de profondes transformations dont les manifestations se situeraient entre le xie et le xiie siecle, c'est a dire au moment meme ou la situation economique et politique de l'egypte musulman, voire de tout le bassin mediterraneen oriental subissait une restructuration en profondeur. Par ailleurs ma monographie de deux centres urbains, tinnis et farama, qui associe la legende a la realite dans la recherche de leurs origines, reaffirme l'idee de continuite et d'anciennete du phenomene des transformations geographiques, ce qui nous permet de conclure que l'histoire du bas delta oriental est avant tout une histoire de l'environnement.
