The deutscher caritasverband emerged at the end of the nineteenth century thanks to the fertilizing influence of catholic charitable practices and the help of catholic associations. Its growth was slow until 1914; nonetheless, in this early period, this caritative organization appealed to an elite catholic audience and defined the two fundamental principles that were to guide its actions: denominational affirmation and scientific exigences. The First World War and the ecclesiastical and state recognitions that this brought enabled the deutscher caritasverband to expand, becoming by the end of the Weimar period one of the most powerful German private charitable organizations. During this period of change, the two founding principles of its activities were preserved, but the competition that developed in social welfare eireles and the process of institutionalization that affected the organization represented a threat to the maintenance of its functional specificity in the world of German social welfare.

Né à la fin du 19ème siècle sur le terreau de la renaissance caritative catholique et grâce à l'aide du milieu associatif catholique, le deutscher caritasverband connait jusqu'en 1914 une période de lente gestation. Dès cette période cependant, l'organisation caritative trouve une audience auprès des élites catholiques et définit les deux principes fondamentaux qui doivent guider son action: l'affirmation confessionnelle et l'exigence scientifique. La première guerre mondiale et les reconnaissances ecclésiastiques et étatiques qu'elle entraine lui permettent de prendre son essor et de devenir à la fin de la république de Weimar l'une des organisations les plus puissantes de la bienfaisance privée allemande. Au cours de cette évolution, les deux principes qui fondent son action continuent d'être préservés, mais les concurrences qui grandissent dans le milieu de l'assistance et le processus d'institutionnalisation qui affecte l'organisation représentent une menace pour le maintien de la spécificité de sa fonction au sein du monde de l'assistance allemande.
