Dom edmond martene (1654 - 1739), a benedictine monk of the saint maur congregation, was one of of jean mabillon's disciples. His voyage litteraire (paris, 1717 and 1724) was accompanied by two collections of historic documents (the thesaurus novus anecdotorum and the veterum scriptorum. . . ), in the service of the gallis christiana, martene and his "socius", ursin durand travelled throughout france, belgium and germany from 1708 to 1713 and in 1718. It was on the one hand a scholarly journey through eight hundred monastic libraries in which can be found the intellectual practises of the maurists and on the other hand a specific look at religious life in catholic europe around 1710 - 1720.

Dom edmond martene (1654- 1739), benedictin de la congregation de saint-maur, fut un des disciples de jean mabillon. Son voyage litteraire (paris, 1717 et 1724) fut accompagne de deux collections de documents histoirques (le thesaurus novus anecdotorum et le veterum scriptorum. . . ). Au service de la gallia christiana,martene et son "socius", ursim durand, parcoururent la france, la belgique et l'allemagne de 1708 a 1713 et en 1718. Il s'agit d'une part d'un voyage erudit dans huit cents bibliotheques monastiques dans lequel on retrouve les pratiques intellectuelles des mauristes et d'autre part d'un regard specifique sur la vie religieuse en europe catholique vers 1710 - 1720.
