During its long history, the arab calligraphy was able to gain a substantial aesthetic value. This value is based on the following : - the arab mentality and the intellectual constitution of the arab individual. - the role of the "sacred language" in the artistic expression - the role of islam as a religion revealed on arab land. - the semitic attitude in relation to the anthropomorphical representa- tion and islam's position towards the same direction. - the formal structure of the arabic letter, its flexibility, its mal- leability and its capacity to embrace forms in all fields and areas. - the role of non-arab islamic peoples in the plastic promotion of the arab calligraphy and the influence of their cultural specificities on the invention of new styles. Finally, the arab contemporary lettrist school is an additional proof of the plasticity of the arab calligraphy as a means of inspiration for many arab contemporary painters.

Tout au long de son histoire, la calligraphie arabe est parvenue a acquerir une grande valeur esthetique. Cette valeur se fonde sur les bases suivantes : - la mentalite arabe, la constitution de l'individu arabe. - le role de la "langue sacree" dans l'expression artistique. - le role de l'islam en tant que religion nee en terre arabe. - l'attitude semitique par rapport a la representation anthro- pomorphique et la position de l'islam qui pousse dans le meme sens. - la structure formelle de la lettre arabe, sa souplesse, sa mallea- bilite et son aptitude a epouser des formes dans tous les domaines et espaces. - le role des peuples islamiques non arabes dans la promotion plastique de la calligraphie arabe et les influences de leurs specificites culturelles sur la production de nouveaux styles. - enfin l'ecole lettriste arabe contemporaine est une preuve supple- mentaire de la plasticite de la calligraphie arabe comme etant une source d'inspiration pour nombreux peintres arabes contemporains.
