Fath ash-shakur : hommes de lettres, disciples et enseignement dans le Takrur du XVIe au début du XIXe siècle

This dissertation is a translation and a historical study of the fath ash-shakur fi ma'rifat a'yan 'ulama' at-takrur ("the key given by god for making known the noteworthy scholars of takrur"), a biographical anthology of the leading muslim scholars of the west african region of takrur (current-day mauritania and mali). Written by muhammad b. Abu bakr as-siddiq al-burtuli al-walati (1727 or 1728-1805), the fath contains 209 biographies of leading intellectuals of takrur, who lived between the 16th and the beginning of the 19th century. In my analysis of the fath, i have presented the author, the manuscripts used, the geographical scope, and the historical context. I have extracted important themes relating to: social life, different roles of scholars in the takruri society, islamic teaching, takruri teachers, fundamental books for islamic teaching, and relationship teacher-disciple. In sum, this study shows how this region was important for its cultural weight and its role which which rested in the fact that it constituted a human and cultural link between the maghrib and subsaharan west africa.

Cette these est une traduction et etude historique du fath ash-shakur fi ma'rifat a yan ulama' at-takrur, "la cle donnee par (dieu,) le tres-reconnaissant pour connaitre les lettres celebres du takrur", un ouvrage biographique qui interesse l'histoire religieuse, litteraire et sociale du takrur (c'est-a-dire approximativement l'espace de la mauritanie et du mali actuels). Ecrit par mohammad b. Abu bakr as-siddiq al-burtuli al-walati, ecrivain maure (1727 ou 1728-1805), le fath contient 209 biographies dont la quasi-totalite concerne des personnages morts entre le 16e et le debut du 19e siecle. Dans mon analyse de cet ouvrage, j'ai presente l'auteur, les manuscrits utilises, l'espace concerne etle contexte historique. J'ai tire de grands traits concernant des themes importants de l'ouvrage. Ils touchent: a la vie sociale, aux differents roles des lettres dans la societe takruri, a l'enseignement, aux maitres takruri, aux livres fondamentaus pour cet enseignement et aux relations maitre-disciple. En gros, cette etude montre combien cette region est importante par son poids culturel dans le monde musulman et son role qui residait dans le fait qu'il constituait une charniere, un lien humain et culturel entre le maghreb et l'afrique sub-saharienne.
