Robert Couturier is a French sculptor. He began to work at the beginning of the twenties, in Paris, and was Maillol's student. Soon, he became very famous receiving many commissioned works. After the Second World War, he became one of the artists of the movement called “miserabilism”. Interested in figurative subject, he contributed with Germaine Richier and Alberto Giacometti to give a new interpretation of the human figure. Forms became more interpretative than representative and material reduced, aggressive and exacerbated. Robert couturier's sculptures catalogue includes 450 numbers showing the important production of the artist between 1923 and 1997. An analytic and critic text goes with the catalogue proposing a chronological and thematic approach. It's the first time that an university research has been made on couturier's work showing the influence he had on post second world war figurative sculpture.

Cette thèse est le catalogue raisonné de l'œuvre sculptée de Robert Couturier qui comporte 450 numéros qui correspondent aux sculptures recensées sur une période débutant en 1923 et s'achevant en 1997. Le catalogue raisonné constitue l'essentiel de ce travail et est complété d'un texte critique qui propose une étude analytique de l'œuvre de Couturier. Ce texte est accompagné d'annexes (écrits de l'artiste, entretiens, correspondance, fortune critique) ainsi que d'une bibliographie, de la liste des expositions et d'un dossier iconographique qui permet principalement de mettre en parallèle le travail de Couturier avec celui d'autres artistes. Robert Couturier a tenu une place importante dans la sculpture française de l'après Seconde Guerre mondiale en offrant une nouvelle interprétation de la figure humaine. Si le motif est reste traditionnel, le renouveau est apparu principalement dans l'expression de la forme et dans le choix d'une matière étirée, déchiquetée et exacerbée. Dans ses investigations, Couturier est indissociable de Germaine Richier et d'Alberto Giacometti qui ont contribué, à la même époque, à renouveler eux aussi la sculpture figurative.
