The work this thesis deals with concerns some transformation altarpieces a picture of devotion, two wings, a predella, two portraits (altogether about thirty pictures) due to an anonymous strasbourg painter of the early xvith century previously identified with grunewald, baldung, durer, when young, among others. This thesis- notwithstanding long archives- researches - didn't allow to find out the name of the artist, permitted though to reject the erroneous identifications, to deepen the analysis of the painter's style to assign his place in his time and the upper-rhine region, lastly to see what his original contribution was, as a pupil of durer, to art in strasbourg, beside baldung grien. The possible identification of all the commanditaires whether clerical or laic, of their social rank and political and religious role, in particular their active part in the roman catholic pre-reformation and the rhenish pre-humanism, on the eve of the reformation, has permitted, thanks to the contents and shape of this art, to discover in this artist a way to express the catholic faith and to seet the problem about the possible functions of the altarpieces and religious pictures at a period when image worship passed through a crisis.

L'oeuvre dont traite cette these concerne quelques retables a transformation, un tableau de devotion, deux volets, une predelle, deux portraits (environ trente tableaux) d'un peintre strasbourgeois anonyme du debut du xvie siecle, autrefois identifie avec les jeunes baldung, durer et grunewamd, entre autres. Cette these, si elle n'a pas permis d'identifier, malgre d'importantes recherches d'archives, le nom de l'artiste, a permis de rejeter les fausses identifications, d'approfondir l'analyse du style de ce peintre, de le situer dans son epoque et dans le haut-rhin, enfin de voir quel fut son apport original, en tant qu'eleve de durer, a l'art strasbourgeois, a cote de baldung. L'identification possible de tous les commanditaires, tant ecclesiastiques que laics, de leur rang et role social, politique et religieux, en particulier leur role actif dans la prereforme catholique et le prehumanisme rhenan a la veille de la reformation, a permis de decouvrir en lui une expression de la foi catholique et de poser la problematique des fonctions que pouvaient encore avoir les retables et images religieuses, a cette epoque de la crise iconoclaste de l'image.
