Often underestimated, the artistic life in province under the third republic left however numerous unpublished testimonies through the press and the public archives. Such is the case for montpellier or the years 1870 to 1918 show themselves an exceptional density. Indissolubly connect to the sociocultural context, the "fine arts" find here their identity in the conjunction of the individualities and the institutions. Study minutely, the example montpellieran appears in all its specificity but also with the constants of time: academic education, associative movement, annual exhibitions, development museologique, journalistic profusion, superiority of the state commision and the official distinctions. A directory of the artists in activity in montpellier during this period (more than 400) contributes to show of the local productivity in architecture sculpture, decorative arts, painting. Between the lines of a regional ascendancy, detained by montpellier, shows through the discreet obstinacy of the "small masters", eternal raised by their ideal.

Souvent meconnue, la vie artistique en province sous la troisieme republique a laisse cependant de nombreux temoignages inedits, a travers la presse et les archives publiques. Tel est le cas pour montpellier, ou les annees 1870 a 1918 se revelent d'une exceptionnelle densite. Indissolublement lies au contexte socio-culturel, les "beaux-arts" trouvent ici leur identite dans la conjonction des individualites et des institutions. Etudie minutieusement, l'exemple montpellierain apparait dans toute sa specificite, mais aussi avec les constantes d'une epoque: enseignement academique, mouvement associatif, expositions annuelles, developpement museologique, foisonnement journalistique, primaute de la commande publique et des distinctions officielles. Un repertoire des artistes en activite a montpellier durant cette periode (plus de 400) contribue a temoigner de la productivite locale en matiere d'architecture, sculpture, arts decoratifs, peinture. En filigrane d'une preponderance regionale, detenue par montpellier, transparait la discrete opiniatrete des "petits maitres", eternels eleves de leur ideal.
