The use of writing in the images of attic ceramics poses the problem of two levels of comprehension which this thesis will try to demonstrate. Writing, by drawing attention to one or several figures in the image, reveals various ways of naming depending on whether the name of the subject is also the active agent of the narration represented. Thus, an imagery of the heroic type may use "signifiying" names to comment on the action depicted. The labelled character becomes the principal actor in the iconographic narration as well as the basis for commentary. In the representation of women in the gyneceum, on the other hand, the names when they do not designate mythic characters, show a short series of personified concepts, female figures without characteristic attributes, surrounding aphrodite. The combination of the concepts in repetitive scenes allows us to formulate an idea of female behaviour in the city. The thesis will attempt to bring out the originality and extend of a conceptual system allowing us to define a feminine order which obeys the laws of the "eunomia",i. E, the law of aphrodite and promises fame and pleasure.
