Persuing an idea of the revolution, the iiird republic made of primary education a non-religious public service. Side by side with this development went the foundation of numerous schools. That the republican ideas should be embodied in architecture is quite fascinating and it is this dialogistic relationship between an idea and its realisation that we have attempted to grasp through the history of the elaboration of school buildings. Taking building constructed between 1870 and 1914 in paris, this study combines three lines of approach. Texts and ministerial regulations led to the definition of the role the ambitions of the state. From the analysis of land percels and their formation emerged the municipal land policy. Finally, an examination of the projects and realizations permitted the characterization of the architectural rhetoric. Thus is shaped school architecture. Ignored or rather unknown, it proves to be a successful field of experience; born of this "fin de siecle" and its most progressive mouvements united under the banner of reason.

La troisieme republique, poursuivant une idee de la revolution, fait de l'enseignement primaire un service public laic. Ce developpement s'accompagne de la creation de nombreux edifices scolaires. Que les idees des republicains puissent etre incarnees a travers l'architectire a quelque chose de fascinant, et c'est ce rapport dialogique entre une idee et sa realisation que l'on a tente de saisir a travers l'histoire de l'elaboration des edifices scolaires. Abordant les batiments construits entre 1870 et 1914 a paris, l'etude combine trois approches differentes. A partir des textes et reglements ministeriels, sont definis le role et les ambitions de l'etat. De l'analyse des parcelles et de leur formation est degagee la politique fonciere municipale. Enfin, de l'examen des projets et des realisations, est caracterisee la rethorique architecturale. Ainsi se dessine l'architecture scolaire. Deconsideree ou plutôt meconnue, elle se revele etre un champ d'experiences reussies. Elle est fille de cette fin de siecle et de ses courants les plus progressistes unis sous la banniere de la raison.
