This overall study deals with images of mutilated bodies which were created during the Weimar germany. It offers new readings of the artworks relying of the method of iconology in the modern sense of the term. The corpus is made of images chosen from the work of twenty or so artists and his interpretation is meant to bring forward the varied significations ascribed to them by the many german avant-gardes of the interwar period. When added to psychoanalytic and mythological readings, the analysis of the official political discourse adopted while refering to mutilated soldiers has made it possible to clarify the role given to the mutilated figure within two essential themes of german art in the 1920's. That is the relationship between art and politics and its reflections on the modern industrial society.

Première étude d'ensemble consacrée aux images de corps mutilés créées sous la république de Weimar, ce travail propose une approche iconologique au sens moderne du terme. Le corpus, compose d'images puisées dans l'œuvre d'une vingtaine d'artiste est ainsi interprété de manière à mettre en évidence les significations diverses que lui attribuent les différentes avant-gardes allemandes de l'entre-deux-guerres. S'ajoutant aux lectures psychanalytique et mythologique, l'exposition et l'analyse du discours de la politique officielle adoptée à l'égard des mutilés ont ainsi permis d'élucider le rôle et la place accordés à la figure du mutilé au sein de deux problématiques essentielles de l'art allemand des années vingt, celle des rapports de l'art et de la politique et celle de sa réflexion sur la société machiniste
