Contrary to the architecture, the early norman sixteenth century sculpture is hardly celebrated. In spite of numerous destructions the first renaissance sculpture remains florishing, precisely because of its bonds with architecture. Tradition ? innovation ? we have found that the weight of tradition is overwhelming as longas this tradition is alive-that is to say as long as it fashions according to its own spirit all the various currents that occur through haute-normandie. We also found that the italian "infliuence", entirely "translated" in norman is actually much more visible in the ornament than in the statuary. 1525-1530 : the norman local patronage for the arts ends and there beguins a way of supremacy of the fontainebleau school.

A la difference de l'architecture, la sculpture de la premiere renaissance normande du xvie siecle est demeuree tres peu connue. En depit de nombreuses destructions, cette sculpture est demeuree fort abondante- certainement en vertu de ses liens avec l'architecture. Tradition ? innovation ? nous avons trouve que le poids de la tradition pese infiniment plus que celui de l'innovation (transalpine en particulier), aussi longtemps du moins que cette tradition demeure vivante, c'est a dire capable d'integrer a ses exigences propres les multiples influences qui parcourent la province. Nous avons egalement trouve que l'italianisme - completement retranscrit en normand - est bien plus flagrant dans l'ornement que dans la statuaire. 1525-1530: le mecenat local s'acheve et lui succede la suprematie, en somme, de l'italianisme bellifontain.
