Abstract EN:

A history of the calico printing and dyeing industry, that developed near paris between 1825 and 1875 at courbevoie, puteaux and suresnes. The local industrial system is akin to the "municipal system" (sabel and zeitlin) in which social needs are taken care of by civil authorities or mutual aid rather than by employers' patronage. According to levine, the nbature of social control determines the relationship between "proto-industrialization" and demographic behaviour ; however such an hypothesis can't be tested because the centre studied developed mainly through immigration, and demographic statistic statistics are not comparable with those of other centres. Hence, it is better to understand the internal logic of the local social system and moral economy: immigrants came to this area of rural democracy to found an industrial colony in which they transplanted rules anbd behaviour that were jeopardized in older and more urbanized centres (bolbec, lyon). Thus they created a "terroir" (or "homeland") margely unaffected by neighbouring paris, and were able to claim a desting of their own, very different from that of nearby belleville
