Ce travail examine l'implantation et le fonctionnement de la republique et du federalisme au bresil sous la premiere republique (1889-1930). L'etude prosopographique des elites politiques montre que la premiere republique n'a pas ete dominee par les planteurs de cafe. Le comportement politique des etats du rio grande do sul, bahia, rio de janeiro et pernambouc nuance fortement l'idee d'une "hegemonie" des etats de sao paulo et du minas gerazis sur l'ensemble de la federation. Le role du senateur gaucho pinheiro machado dans les successions presidentielles, ainsi que ses projets politiques pour organiser la federation, est egalement mis en evidence.

Abstract FR:

This thesis deals with the implementation of republic and federalism in brazil during the first republic (1889-1930). The prosopografic study of the brazalian political elites shows that the coffee planters do not dominate the state. Moreover, the political behavior of rio grande do sul, bahia, rio de janeiro and pernambouc, qualifies the idea of a sao paulo and minas gerais "hegemony" on the federation the leading part of the gaucho senator pinheiro machado, and his political propositions in order to organize the federation, are also emphasized.
