The thesis focuses on luis emilio recabarren (1876-1924), a typographer who played an important part in chilean social history. The introduction brings out the most significant moments of his career. The first chapter brings up the methodological problems presented by this particular study. The three following chapters are about the democratic, anarchist and socialist political cultures respectively which structurel recabarren's political imagination. These imaginary structures affected recabarren's reading of politics to the extent that political problems were always represented in terms of his particular system of images symbols. The fifth chapter is about recabarren's political heritage. A brief conclusion sums up the original aspects of this study while opening up potential avenues research for the future. The text is coclues with a long bibliographical chapter, a detailed chronology and an index.

La these porte sur luis emilio recabarren (1876-1924), ouvrier typographe, qui a joue unrole essentiel dans l'histoire sociale chilienne. L'introduction met en relief les moments marquants de son itineraire et le premier chapitre souleve les problemes methodologiques que la recherche a du surmonter. Les trois chapitres suivants s'occupent respectivement des cultures politiques d'origine democratique, libertaire et socialiste qui participent a la formation de l'imaginaire politique de recabarren qui represente, a son tour, une grille de dechiffrement, ou le politique n'est jamais dissocie de sa charge d'images et de symboles. Le cinquieme chapitre traite de l'heritage politiqsue de recabarren. Une breve conclusion recapitule certains acquis de cette recherche tout en ouvrant quelques lignes de travail. Le texte est complete par un long chapitre bibliographique, une chronologie detaillee et d'un index.
