Abstract EN:
The contemporary spanish painters have woven an intricate as well as uncommon network of relations with the art of their past in which they have found their inspiration, and especially through diego velazquez's work after calling up the velazquez myth and its power of influencing the consumer society, we shall notice that pablo picasso's action of revival through the meninas in 1957 has originated a pictorial phenomenon of "flash back" based on the models of yesterday, yet more accentuated by the games of re-interpretation in keeping with the artistic postmodernism. On the eve of the third millennium when technological progress is playing an important role in our everyday life, eduardo arroyo, salvador dali, alberto duce, antonio saura and manolo valdes have chosen to paint after the manner of velazquez : it is their own way of asserting their hispanity while questioning the possible conditions of the painting. Their only concern is to alter the royal painter's masterpieces that are now stereotypes of the hispanic patrimony. Thus, their creative approach - which is also that of many artists in spain and beyond the peninsular borders - is centred on the tribute, the challenge set to other painters, the will to break away from the past, the critical look which sometimes takes the shape of literary variations. Just before the four-hundredth celebration of velazquez's birth, the many re-creations of his canvases have put the "painter of the truth" under the spotlights again.
