The organisation of official festivities and receptions, studied mainly from an anthropologic point of view, demonstrates revealing signs of a republican search of identity. Through the bias of the protocole, the men in power express their will to integrate republican france into a europe composed of empires and kingdoms, but in the same time stressing the particularity of the republic. The casting of the roles, the arrangement of the processions, the theatrical decors, the charm of festive time and space confer a marvellous aura to political life; they bring out the conflict between abstraction and incarnation. The examination of the details of the rituels and of the relation between the existing groups disclose a republic more inclined towards a monarchal tradition than change and a break with the "ancien regime". The president of the republic appears, contrary to previous ideas, as a central personality around whom the nation's imagination crystallizes. Although symbolic, this role is none the less particularly effective in the elaboration and consolidation of the regime.

Le processus des fetes et receptions officielles etudie essentiellement d'un point de vue anthropologique, devoile des signes revelateurs de la quete d'identite de la republique. A travers le protocole les hommes du pouvoir expriment leur volonte d'integration de la france republicaine dans une europe d'empires et de royaumes; ils affirment en meme temps les particularites de la republique. La distribution des roles, l'agencement des corteges, la theatralite des decors, l'enchantement du temps et de l'espace festifs conferent a la vie politique un aspect merveilleux; ils mettent en relief la tension entre l'abstraction et l'incarnation du pouvoir. L'etude des elements des rituels, des rapports entre les groupes en presence montre que la republique s'inscrit plus dans la tradition monarchique que dans la nouveaute et la rupture avec l'ancien regime. Le president de la republique apparait, contrairement a ce qui avait ete ecrit jusqu'ici, comme un personnage central autour duquel se cristallise l'imaginaire de la nation. Pour etre symbolique ce role n'en est pas moins particulierement efficace dans l'elaboration et la consolidation du regime.
