Starting from a prosopographic analysis of the legal personnel of the Portuguese crown, this study proposes to reconstruct the group of learned magistrates at the service of the king, not only in metropolitan Portugal but also in its colonial territories. The organization of powers in Ancien Régime Portugal of resembles the judicial procedure, and civil law, derived from the Roman law, is used as a power technology. Jurists, who assist the action of the king with their technical speciality, not only at the great councils but also at the growing legal apparatus which extends to the colonies, set up a bureaucratic group which is analyzed from both social and institutional points of view. The study tries to cross contributions from political and institutional history, social history and network analysis to reconstitute the group of magistrates, its social and geographical origins, its recruitment and the various professional paths opened by the king's service.

À partir d'une analyse prosopographique du personnel judiciaire de la couronne portugaise, cette étude se propose de reconstituer le groupe des magistrats lettrés au service du roi, aussi bien à la métropole qu'aux territoires coloniaux. L'organisation des pouvoirs au Portugal de l'Ancien Régime ressemble celle d'une procédure judiciaire et le droit romain est une technologie de pouvoir. Les juristes, qui assistent l'action du roi par sa spécialité technique, non seulement dans les grands conseils mais aussi dans un appareil judiciaire en croissance et qui s'étend aux colonies, constituent un groupe bureaucratique qui est analysée du point de vue sociale et institutionnelle. L'étude essaye de croiser des apports de l'histoire politique et institutionnelle, de l'histoire sociale et de l'analyse de réseaux pour reconstituer le groupe de magistrats, ses origines sociales et géographique, son recrutement et les différents parcours professionnels ouverts par le service du roi.
