Costas Tsaras was a greek artist who lived in Paris during the sixties. Contact with abstract movements within the paris school drew him to non-figurative painting. On returning to Greece, Tsaras expressed himself freely, using both abstractive and figurative language. The paintings of his greek period are inspired by historical events which strongly affected modern Greece (the dictatorship, the civil war and the German occupation). Pelasgia, the artist's birthplace, served as a further source of inspiration (portraits, scenes taken from everyday life, trees, rural architecture and landscapes). His work is also heavily conditioned by his own personal experiences, his political beliefs, his existential worries and inner conflicts, and by personal sorrows and joys. It draws on the myths, poetry and oral tradition of his native land. Although a number of his paintings do more or less form unities, the polymorphism of Tsaras'work prevents one from assigning it to any particular movement. He often opts for a technique on the basis of theme. Then again, he may adopt different artistic solutions not merely in relation to the overall theme, but within the same thematic unity. This may take place within the space of a single year ; the solutions are always subject to the artist's mood. This explain his coming and going between old and new colours and forms, as well as the use of recurrent motifs. Although his compositions are organised either around line or colour, from the early years of the period Tsaras shows a marked preference for colour, whether set within simple geometric shapes or explosed in spatters. Tsaras' art converges on art from primitive times, on Greek and byzantine art and on contemporary European art. It is symbolic and anthropocentric and combines the sacred with the secular, the emotional with the political, martyrdom with the people and love of nature with love humankind. It is a free art, beyond dogma, which perfectly reflects its creator's personality.

Costas Tsaras est un artiste grec qui a vécu à Paris dans les années soixante. Son contact avec les courants abstraits de l'école de Paris, l'a orienté vers une peinture non figurative. Rentré en Grèce, l'artiste s'exprime en toute liberté, aussi bien par la figuration que par l'abstraction. L'œuvre picturale de la période grecque est inspirée par des évènements historiques qui ont ébranlé la Grèce moderne (dictature des colonels, guerre civile, occupation), ainsi que par son village natal, Pelasgia, (portraits, scènes quotidiennes, arbres, architectures villageoises et paysages). Elle est largement conditionnée par les vécus personnels, les convictions politiques, les préoccupations existentielles, les conflits intérieurs, les joies et les chagrins de l'artiste, et nourrie par les mythes, la poésie et la tradition orale de son pays. Malgré la réalisation de tableaux qui, plus ou moins facilement, forment des séries, la polymorphie du langage pictural de Tsaras empêche le classement de son œuvre dans un courant particulier. L'artiste choisit souvent la technique par rapport au thème et adopte des solutions artistiques différentes, non seulement selon le thème, mais aussi à l'intérieur de la même unité thématique et dans l'espace d'une année, solutions toujours assujetties à son émotion. D'où ses aller-retour par rapport à la forme et à la couleur, ainsi que l'emploi de motifs récurrents. Bien que ses compositions soient appuyées tantôt sur la ligne tantôt sur la couleur, Tsaras ne tarde pas à afficher sa prédilection pour la couleur, sertie dans de simples schémas géométriques ou bien explosée en taches. Son œuvre va à la rencontre des arts primitifs, de l'art grec, de l'art byzantin, et de l'art moderne européen. Son art est symbolique et humaniste, mêlant sacré et profane, sentimental et politique, martyre et populaire, amour pour la nature et pour la race humaine. C'est un art libre, hors de toute doctrine, qui reflète parfaitement la personnalité du créateur.
